Proper nutrition is as essential to good health as water and air. However, in an effort to maximize crop yields, and ensure animal health in unhealthy conditions many things have been added to the food chain. These include pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Additionally, many crops have now been genetically modified (GMO) to be pest resistent, to grow faster, and in other ways. Much of Europe has even restricted the importation of GMOed seeds due to the problem of cross pollination which changes the natural crops to GMOed crops.

All of these have had effects on the nutritional quality of the food that is on our markets shelves. True organic foods are not supposed to have been treated with or modified by any of the processes or substances noted above. However, while organic products are becoming more available, they are often limited, and many people find them to be prohibitively expensive.

Even with the availability of organic and whole foods, much of what is actually consumed today has been processed with added preservatives, colorings, chemical flavor enhancers, etc. Fast foods, soft drinks, snack foods all certainly fit the bill of being processed foods with very little nutritional value. These processed foods have been well documented as contributing to the current crisis of obesity throughout our society. They temporarily curb hunger without providing the necessary nutritional needs of the body. This leaves one "craving" more in order to satisfy the body's  deficient nutritional needs, and thus the cycle and journey to obesety are set in motion.  It is essential to eat real food, and not processed "food like" substances.

The result of all of these factors has been the development of a booming nutritional supplement industry. The variety is really rather staggering, and not all suplements are equal. It is important to take some time to become educated on what regulations really exist for nutritional supplements.
